Saturday 12/01/2008 - AUSTRALIA, (New South Wales) Lennox Head, Byron Bay, (Queensland) Noosa

In the morning we drove to Byron Bay, this famous town where it is impossible to get any accommodation during the summer without booking well in advance. We first went to Cape Byron and drove up to the lighthouse (it's better to park at the first car park as the parking next to the lighthouse costs AU$7). The views were great but could have been even better with the sun. However we still had a lovely time and walked down to the beach. Afterwards we wandered in town, enjoying the buzz of this busy place and checking out the numerous shops. Unfortunately it started raining so we could not stay on the beautiful beach to eat our fish and chips. The beach looked awesome under the rain so it must be stunning on a sunny day. The weather did not get any better so we started our long journey up to Noosa on the Sunshine coast. We left New South Wales and entered Queensland, we drove through the Gold Coast and were impressed by the high rise buildings of Surfers Paradise. We crossed quickly Brisbane driving through the bridge (toll AU$2.60). The Pacific Highway north of Brisbane is very boring as it goes through pine trees plantations. The only point of interest was that at one stage we could see on our left the impressive Glass House Mountains rising above the flat landscapes. In Noosa, as all hostels were booked up, we only managed to find spaces in dorms in Noosaville. We did not like the hostel, very noisy and not the best facilities. Noosaville is also nothing special, so we drove to Noosahead which is much nicer. We drove to the national park, checked out the walks we could do on the next day, and then had dinner in a nice restaurant on the high street.
