Monday 22/10/2007 - PERU, Trujillo "Huacas del Sol y de la Luna" & "Chan Chan"

We went to Huacas del sol y de la Luna in the morning. We caught a cab (S/2) to the place where you can catch the combi going to the site and with the help of a Peruvian lady we managed to catch the right combi (S/1 each). We really loved this site. The visit was very interesting and the ruins very nice. Huacas del sol y de la luna are two temples, pyramids, that were built by the Moche (pre-inca civilisation). The archeological work on Huaca de la luna started only in 1991 and there is still plenty of work to do and probably plenty of new treasures to discover. Huaca del sol which is much bigger has not yet been searched. After doing some shopping at a small market next to the visitor center we returned to Trujillo. On the way back we had time to enjoy the nice and relaxed atmosphere of the rural area next to the ruins as our collectivos was driving very slowly trying to get more passengers. After a nice cheap meal, we went to Chan Chan in the afternoon, again by combi (S/1 each) which drop you 1,5 km from the entrance of the site (15min walk). We liked the site but less than the one we saw in the morning, moreover on this site the ticket does not include a guided visit. Afterwards we went back to the main road to get a combi to go to Huacucho a small town on the coast, well known for the bamboo boats used by the fishermen (15min from Chan Chan). We saw plenty of those cute boats on the beach and then enjoyed a nice dinner with view on the ocean before returning to Trujillo to face some problems. First of all our hotel wanted to charge us 5 soles each to keep our bags during the day, we argued with the guy for a good 10min and finally did not pay (never in the past a hotel where we had stayed tried to charge us to keep our luggage, unbelievable!). Then when we went to catch our bus to Huaraz we found out that the two companies offering night buses to Huaraz were fully booked and that we will have to spend one more night in Trujillo. We still tried other companies but none had buses going to Huaraz, so we went to a hotel being very frustrated that we will have to spend one more night in Trujillo when we originally wanted to stay only a day.
