Sunday 20/01/2008 - AUSTRALIA (Northern Territory), Yulara "Uluru & Kata Tjuta", Kings Canyon

We got up very early and left the campground at 5.30am to go watch the sunrise at Uluru. We found out that watching the sunset is a much enjoyable experience. First of all, for the sunrise cars and bus tours are all packed together along the road as there is not a specific car park like for the sunset. Moreover the road is too close to Uluru so you can not fit the all rock in a photo! Finally on this side of Uluru there are lots of trees so it is hard to find a good spot to have a good view on Uluru. We still had a good time watching Uluru changing colours when the sun rises. We had breakfast when all the tours were gone ... as soon as the sun is up they all disappear! Then we drove around Uluru to have once again a close look at this beautiful rock. Afterwards we went to Kata Tjura, 50km from Uluru. On the way we stopped at a lookout that gives you a very nice view on those rocks rising from a very flat landscape. We arrived at 8am at the car park to start the Valley of the winds walk, a bit late to start the walk as it already starts to be hot but in this way we avoided the crowd. We did the walk in 3 hours and loved it. Kata Tjura is made of a different rock than Uluru, you can see it very well as soon as you approach one of the domes. This very nice walk offers two lookouts, the second being the most impressive. Towards the end of the walk we were surprised to see 3 wild camels having a rest under a tree! We were glad to be back at the car as we walked under very high temperatures for the last hour. We returned to Uluru sunset viewing car park to have lunch before starting our journey to Kings Canyon. There is no direct road between Uluru and Kings Canyon as there is the Amadeus Lake in between, so you have to drive back towards Mt Ebenezer for 1h30 before turning left onto Luritja Road. It took us 3h to reach Kings Creek Station a resort 35km before Kings Canyon. They have a campground, a camel farm, offer quad tours and sell cheaper petrol than in Kings Canyon resort, still very expensive so! We had a lovely cappuccino and then drove to Kings Canyon resort where we stayed for the night. The resort has a great swimming pool and a nice setting, however there are too many ants!
