Wednesday 09/01/2008 – AUSTRALIA (New South Wales), Forster, Port Macquarie

Before heading to Foster we checked out Seven Miles Beach just across the road from where we stayed. Very nice beach but too dangerous for swimming. Just before Forster we drove to Cape Hawk lookout. A short walk up the stairs from the car park takes you to an observation platform with stunning views on Forster, Seven Miles Beach and Wallis Lake. We liked Forster as the Wallis Lake shore is very pretty and the beaches very nice. We had lunch at Nine Mile Beach in Tuncurry, the town just across the bridge, and really liked this wild beach. On our way to Port Macquarie, where we had booked accommodation for the night, we went to Ellenborough Falls. That was a lot of driving through unsealed roads but we loved it. We first drove to Wigham via Taree and stopped to walk through the Wigham Brush, a patch of tropical forest, where we saw massive trees (see picture) and also a colony of grey-headed flying foxes (the big bats that we had already seen in Sydney). From Wigham we drove to Elands the very small town next to the falls. More than half of the road is unsealed (17km) and it took us 1h to reach the falls, however this is a very scenic road and we loved driving through those beautiful landscapes and forests. The falls are very nice, very high (200m) and located in a very nice gorge. From the car park you have to do a short walk through the rain forest to get to the point of view on the falls. From Elands to go to Port Macquarie we went via Comboyne and again the road was unsealed for most of the way up to Comboyne (1h drive), but also very scenic. We had a great time, we loved the views, we saw wild kangaroos and had to drive through a group of cows that did not really want to move from the road....scary when you are driving a very small car! When arriving in Port Macquarie very late, just before 9pm, we saw a Koala crossing the street, very cute. We stayed in the same holiday park as for the previous night, however the dorms and the facilities were much better.
