We visited the Inca ruins in the morning. The site was a fortress built to protect Machu Picchu. It was still under construction when the Spanish arrived so it has never been finished. You can see nice terraces, an impressive wall made with high coating, probably a temple, and a wall made of 6 massive stones (see picture). Next to the entrance you also visit fountains and basins. We also saw what used to be a calendar to identify the solstices. On the hill opposite of the site you can see more ruins and you should be able to see a massive face sculpted in the rock. We did not see the face as we did not take a guide and we only found out reading books afterwards. We really enjoyed visiting this site under the sun. We then explored the village which has very nice narrow streets and had lunch before catching a bus to Urubamba (S/1, 30min), there are buses departing every hour one block from the main place. At Urubamba we caught a bus to Cusco via Chinchero (S/3,50, 2h). In Cusco we booked our ticket to Puno and went back to our hotel to get some rest.
