We got a tuk-tuk to get to the long distance bus station of Ayutthaya (Bh50). Arriving at the station we realised why the day before we did not manage to find the station to buy our tickets in advance. We were looking for a big building with a lot of buses parked around it but the station is in fact a very small building located on the side of the highway where the buses from/to Bangkok quickly stop. We did not have to wait long to get a bus to Kamphaeng Phet, however the trip was very long, around 5 hours (Bh220). Not many tourists come to Kamphaeng Phet so there was nothing written in English at the bus station ... and as we do not know the Thai alphabet we couldn't read any information. Songthaew drivers were offering us rides to the town for Bh100 each, a rip off! We finally managed to catch a regular songthaew for Bh20 each. The bus station was very close to the town, however it would have been unpleasant to walk to the town as we would have had to walk along a highway.
Kamphaeng Phet has got two main busy streets but the rest of the town is quiet and it feels like being in a small village. As there is not many tourists there is only one guesthouse in town which is located far from the centre. We opted to stay in a hotel which is straight in the centre. The staff did not speak English but for Bh320 we got a room with air con, hot shower and TV....nice after a long day in a bus!
The next day we had to go to the guesthouse as it is the only place in town where there are bicycles and motorbikes (no automatic) for rent. The temples are too far from the centre to be visited by foot but it was easily feasible with a bicycle (Bh50 per day). All the temples are in ruins and only a few Buddhas and walls still stand, but as there was very few tourists it was very pleasant to visit those temples. There are a lot of temples in Kamphaeng Phet but only a few are worth to visit. The Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Phra That are in town (10min from the guesthouse) and are quite nice. Another 20 min further from those temples, out of town, there are many other temples in the historical park of Aranyik. The Bh40 ticket we bought for the first temples was also valid for the historical park. There is not much left of the temples of the historical park but the fact that they are in the forest give them a lot of charm. We visited the Wat Phra Non, the Wat Phra Sit Iriyabot, the Wat Singh and the Wat Chang Rop. All are visited very quickly but are nice. By mid-day we were back in town to have lunch in the great restaurant we spotted the day before. A very nice place offering good food honestly priced in a well decorated room with air-con ...we were very surprised to find this restaurant in Kamphaeng Phet! After a lovely meal we went to the bus station with a moto-taxi driven by a very nice man that could speak English well (Bh40). The trip to Sukhotai lasted only an hour (55Bh). From the bus bus station we called Sabadee Guesthouse and they came to pick us up for free. This guesthouse is very nice, very quiet and very comfortable. It is located outside the town, but it took us only 20min to walk to the centre. Sukhotai is not a pleasant town to visit it is just a place to stay for visiting the Historical Park of Old Sukhotai, 12km away.
