We had such a great day! The first 30km were not that pleasant as we drove North via a very busy highway, but as soon as we turned onto the road towards Pai it all changed...no more traffic, beautiful landscapes, a lot of "sharp curves" and many viewpoints. It was very exciting to discover this mountainous area. The locals were very friendly, always returning our smiles, we saw a lot of small stands selling fruits and dry seeds on the side of the road, we even passed some elephants carrying some goods along the road! At a lovely lake we saw a lot of fishermen, all comfortably installed under their umbrellas! To have some rest we stopped at a lovely coffee place on the way and had a delicious cappuccino. The road was most of the time surrounded by forests and many times we stopped at nice viewpoints. The temperature dropped as we went up the mountain but the sun was still around and we got sunburn...we forgot our suncream in our backpacks in Chiang Mai and could not find any in the shops on the way. Arriving in Pai we were quite surprised as the landscapes were very dry. We checked in a Guesthouse and after having some rest we decided to explore the area and went to Mo Paeng Waterfalls, located 9km North of Pai. On the way we drove through small villages and saw very nice landscapes...the waterfalls were not that special but we really enjoyed the ride to reach them. Pai itself is a very touristic town, there are plenty of guesthouses and restaurants. It still has the nice feeling of a quiet town and is a nice place to stop for travellers.
Day 1: Chiang Mai -Pai (138km - 5h trip...driving slowly and stopping a lot to take pictures!)
