We left Guayaquil for the Galapagos Islands early in the morning. Guayaquil airport is quite small but very nice, everything is brand new. When flying to the Galapagos before checking in your luggage you have to get it inspected and put through a machine in order to protect the islands from importing foreign organisms. The flight was 1h45 long and the food served by Tame (the Ecuadorian airline) very good. We were
very excited when we saw the land, we were about to arrive on the famous Galapagos Islands! We landed at the airport located on a small island called Baltra. When entering the arrival building which is very small you straight have to pay the $100 entrance fee to the Galapagos National Park. Then you have to wait for theluggage to be unloaded on the floor of an open building where you have to pick them up afterwards. The landscape of Baltra is very flat and dry, there are only a few trees, bushes and cactus on the red rocky volcanic soil. We caught the free bus of the airline to go to the ferry which takes you in 5min for $0.50 to Santa Cruz Island. On the other side a bus ($1.80) and some taxis ($15) wait for the ferry to take the tourists toPuerto Ayora located on the other side of the island. The road goes straight into the land, first through a dry forest under a hot and sunny weather, but
when going up the hill the weather become cold and misty and the vegetation is more tropical and very green. The bus dropped us on the harbour inPuerto Ayora . Hotels are very expensive in this town. We had to pay $25 for a room that was oldish and not that nice but we had hot water, in the other hotels for the same price you get only cold water. The weather was not the best, it was cold and misty but it felt good to
be on the Galapagos Islands. For the rest of the afternoon we wandered around the town. We quickly found out that the restaurants were also very expensive more than $10 for a meal and not all served good food! Our recommendation forPuerto Ayora would be 'Hernan', based on the harbour.
