Sunday 28/10/2007 - PERU, Huaraz "Chavin de Huantar"

We were awaken at 5am, by a bunch of teenagers staying at our hotel, they played loud music, screamed and slammed doors. As the hotel (Hostal Oscars, S/40 per night) could not give us another room, we moved to the hotel next door (Monte Blanco Hotel, S/70, per night, more expensive but more comfortable and with no teenagers!). Before leaving the first hotel we had a huge argument as we didn't want to pay the full price for a sleepless night. We then rushed to catch the bus to Chavin. We missed the bus at 8am, but managed to get tickets for the 8.30am with Chavin Express. The journey to Chavin lasted for 2h30 and was unforgetable: the bus was very old, uncomfortable and packed, the road was very bumpy but the landscapes were very nice (we saw the nice lake Querococha on the way, see picture). Afterwards we also saw a massive statue of Jesus Christ, and it appears that the Peruvians in the bus really liked it as they took lots of pictures of it. The village of Chavin is very small and typical, not much to do over there except of visiting the ruins (S/11 entrance fee). From outside the ruins are not very impressive, but inside the buildings covered by the grass you can discover with pleasure numerous galleries built with massive stones. The tunnels are pretty low, if you taller than 1,70 watch your head! The way back to Huaraz was even more interesting, when we passed XXX at 4500m it was snowing and afterwards it was raining ... even in our bus!
