We arrived in Chiclayo at 4.45am and straight rushed to catch a taxi to get to a company terminal that will have buses going to Trujillo, but both were closed due to the census. We asked our taxi driver if there will be other buses going to Trujillo and he told us that he could drive us to a place where buses going to Lima stops to pick up passengers. Luckily there was a bus going to Lima that had stopped and was waiting for passengers. The controller wanted to charge us 20 soles for the trip (3h) bus as we had paid 2 days before 12 soles for a 3h trip we have been very firm and managed to pay only 12 soles. We arrived at 8h30 in Trujillo. The bus dropped us at the outskirt of the town. Another guy got off at the same time and offered us to share the same taxi to the centre. It was unreal, none of the taxis passing wanted to drive us, they were all going home for the census. One finally took us and we discovered an empty Trujillo, there was no cars on the streets and nobody around only policemen and teenagers going to houses to do the census. We walked around the town it was really bizarre to have all the shops, restaurants, cafes closed. Only the hotels were opened. We went to one of them to have breakfast and drop our luggage's. We soon realised that we were stuck and will loose a day as we would not be able to do anything. We spent our day wandering in town spotting other frustrated tourists. The town was more animated in the afternoon but really returned to normal after 6pm. We were wondering if we should catch a night bus to Huaraz as planned or if we should stay one more day to visit the very famous sites of Hucas del Sol y de la Luna and Chan Chan. But we finally decided to stay.
